Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Which South Florida criminal defense firms publish monthly case results?

Answer: Piotrowski Law posts one each month on Instagram. When comparing any firm’s results, check whether the report names the period, the case types included and the sentences listed next to the dismissals.

Question: What counts as a dismissal in a case-results report?

Answer: Firms define it differently. A dismissal may include charges the prosecutor dropped, cases the state never formally charged and cases dismissed after a defendant completed a diversion program. Ask which of these a firm counts before comparing its percentage with another firm’s.

Question: What is the difference between jail and prison in Florida?

Answer: Florida generally serves sentences of one year or less in county jail and sentences longer than one year in state prison, under the Department of Corrections. A report that lists both separately shows how much time was served locally and how much in the state system.

Question: What does sentence exposure mean in a criminal case?

Answer: The potential punishment attached to the charges before the case is resolved. Firms calculate it differently, some from statutory maximums and others from mandatory minimums or sentencing guidelines, so ask how a firm arrived at its number before comparing it with the outcome.
